We got to Naples last evening about 6 o'clock. A big change from Verona in every possible way -- weather (from heavy rain and cool temperatures to sultry heat), apparent wealth (from a kind of glossy, well-maintained prosperity to dirty streets and graffiti), and energy (serene decorousness to rude vitality). In short, the first impression is the cliche' of Naples as a chaotic but energetic mess.
I'm not seeing much of it today. After the intense and exceptionally wonderful experience that was Verona, I needed a day to hole up in the hotel -- a luxurious junior suite with real, honest-to-God air conditioning -- and write, post, etc. Still having a hell of a time posting photos, because something seems a little fucked up with Typepad. And I don't have the photo editing software that I had on the old computer, so simple cropping is almost impossible to do.
Anyway, there are many tasting notes, winery visits and other good things to write about. They will be posted out of chronological order -- some have been already.
I still haven't quite found the words to describe the wines we tasted at Le Fonti, in Chianti, through the good offices of our friend Tony Sasa. Soon, though, soon.
Meanwhile, take a look at a few pix of Verona in the continuation. What a city, what great people.
