Fredric Koeppel and his wife (la dolce meta', as they say in Italian) came to New York yesterday for a sort of working vacation. Fredric will be busy tasting while Leslie will be visiting art installations and museums.
Look out for some welcome news from Mr. Koeppel before too long.
We had a lovely evening with them at Julie's house last night, where I am sure I bored them to tears with tales of Italy. We drank some decent stuff before dinner, including a pleasant unoaked Chilean Chardonnay, while at dinner we had a Feudi di San Gregorio Falanghina (about my 20th bottle in the past few weeks) and a very nice Sangiovese from Di Majo Norante, one of the shining stars of the Molise wine scene. This was a terrific everyday wine that cost our hostess about $10. A little bell-pepperish at first, it opened up and accompanied the main course and cheese plate quite well.
It's my blog and I'll curse if I want to
Frederic laughingly mentioned to Leslie that "he even says 'fuck' in his blog. No one does that!"
My reaction to this was one of bemusement.
Well, yes, I do write "fuck", from time to time, not to mention "shithole" and other pungent words. I can be a pretty vehement character, and if you're going to have a blog, then be yourself...just not too much yourself, of course.
And give 'em something they can't in the "mainstream media," including a lot of ladylike blogs, like unpussyfooted opinions and visceral reactions. Dare to be wrong. Dare to be an asshole, if need be.
The good, obedient schoolboy in me debated this internally, for some months, after I began this blog last October. The slightly naughty schoolboy in me won out.
Look. If your own blog isn't an expression of who you are, and if at 60 years old you haven't got the balls to be exactly who you are, then why bother with any of it?
And let the non-oak chips fall where they may.

well. you're kind to mention our working/having fun sojourn in the city, you old bastard, and that was a fine evening at julie's. i really like that little sangiovese, goddamnit, and as soon as i get back to my own keyboard, i'll write something about it. we had a very nice dinner at the little owl this evening, with a half-bottle of gruner veltliner and a regular bottle of Qupe Los Olivos Cuvee 2004, an excellent Rhone-style blend of syrah, mourvedre and grenache ($48). Hell and damnation, it was good.
