"The Way" -- Back at work and no Fastball
There was a fairly portentous song by Fastball, which came out in the 90s. It was called "The Way," and it captures my mood -- my lazy, slacking, feckless, irresponsible mood -- as I've gone back to work and left off my travels in La Bell'Italia:
They made up their minds
And they started packing
They left before the sun came up that day
An exit to eternal summer slacking
But where were they going without ever knowing the way?
They drank up the wine
And they got to talking
They now had more important things to say
And when the car broke down they started walking
Where were they going without ever knowing the way?
Chorus:
Anyone could see the road that they walk on is paved in gold
And its always summer, theyll never get cold
Theyll never get hungry
Theyll never get old and gray
You can see their shadows wandering off somewhere
They wont make it home
But they really dont care
They wanted the highway
Theyre happy there today , today
Fortunately, I do have a few nice wine-related things to look forward to. Tomorrow the one and only Fredric Koeppel will be in town, and we will have dinner (and a lot of good juice) with him, his wife and our mutual friend Julie.
And on the 19th I will run like hell from my day job -- instructing the minds of our young in the joys of constructive self-expression -- all the way down to SoHo. That tasting will feature the wines of Trentino, specifically those of Egle Armani and the Albino Armani family. Egle is a friend of Elisabetta Tosi. And Lizzy, as you may recall, worked hard and successfully to show us some of the terrific smaller wineries of Valpolicella last month. I'm excited about tasting a number of wines from this region, and of course I look forward to meeting Egle herself.
More tasting opportunities to come, even for one who has a day job that limits attending the big events.
Meanwhile, there's this view from Carlo Boscaini's vineyard:
Ah, Italia Italia...
