Picture gallery: A glimpse of Puglia

This Adriatic region of Italy is definitely off the usual American rut of Veniceflorencerome.  It's worth exploring, as Dom did for a few days.  Beautiful, more open and far more Mediterranean in feeling than Tuscany, it recalls Greece and Turkey in many things -- the houses in certain towns, the landscape, the endless olive groves. 

One that that Domenico couldn't capture in his photos was the scent in the air, nearly everywhere he went, of Mediterranean herbs, all the flowers of the field in bloom, and the tang of the sea in places like Polignano a Mare, which is also the hometown of Domenico Modugno. 

In a later post I will write a distillation of his tasting notes at a new but promising winery, Polvanera, located in the Gioia del Colle zone, known mainly for Primitivo.  But it turned out that Primitivo wasn't the winery's secret weapon.
