Many shall remain captionless. The name of the photo usually provides all you really need to know.
I did go a little wild taking pix there. It's hard not to. Enjoy a few vicarious hours there anyway.
The espresso here at Bar Ducale is the best north of Naples, I swear. And not overpriced, either.
Taken from the hotel room. Gondolas were full of Spanish high school kids who egged the gondoliers on to a series of races. Loud and a lot of fun to watch.

Guidebooks often describe Castello in condescending terms. Why? Because it isn't all about crumbling monuments to the past? It's an area you'd actually want to live in.

I'm glad you reconsidered your opinion about Venice.
Keep in mind that you had two main advantages:
- nice weather
- low tourist season
In a hot and humid August (afoso, we woud say), the city, packed with turists, might be less charming...

It's true. The canals didn't stink at all.
It's still outrageously expensive, a real rip-off, though.
I found the dialect pretty hard to understand.

Any idea how long Bar Ducale has been there, Terry? I'd swear, just from looking at your photo, that I had espresso there when last in Venice (about 20 years ago).

No idea. But I did tell the guy behind the bar that we talked about the coffee constantly, and that it was one of the best things we found in Venice!
