I won't get all worked up (again) over the state and the direction of this country.

The Fourth of July was celebrated in San Diego with the usual So Cal, Ronald Reagan-John Wayne fanfare. In La Jolla, the Country Club, the top village restaurateur, and a local bank competed to see who's fireworks display could wag harder.

At the same time, I never felt so moved by the commemoration: driving back and forth from San Diego to Los Angeles, you see the Marines' desert-camouflaged tanks lined up on transport trains, destined no doubt for Iraq. In a shopping mall in South San Diego (where I traveled to buy a car), you see the worried looks on the faces of service women and men and you can't help but weigh the human cost of a war waged so that Chevron, Shell, and BP could wrest Texas tea away from the Sultan.
No great insights here... Just a view from the perspective of the antipodes (literally).

Jeremy, nice apercus regarding the worried faces of the servicemen + women and their families. They bear all the weight of this thankless war. The contrast you evoke between all the flag-waving complacency and those burdens is valuable.
As to your final point, ragazzo, out of sight, out of mind. You really should move back to where you best fit in.
